When I was growing up, we lived in the country and stray cats always seemed to find us.  We adopted all of our cats this way . . . first seeing if they were friendly, then taking them to the vet, then finally taking them back home.  They were all inside/outside cats and we had a nice yard for them.  Now, I’m at school, and I wanted to have a friend in my apartment.  My boyfriend bought Herman for me last May.  The adoption process was pretty easy.  I had to tell them about how much space Herman would have, whether or not there would be any other pets around.  The adoption fee was only $80 (I’m sure this is different for other places) and we got him from the Humane Society, which meant that he had started all of his kitten shots and had been fixed already.  It was really great because he only had to go to the vet one more time to finish up his shots for this year. 
I’d like to adopt a girl kitten sometime soon, but I’ll probably have to wait a little longer till I have a more permanent place to live.  I’m done with school in a year and then I would like to get Herman a friend to keep him company while I’m at work all day

Honestly, I found it soooooooooooo much easier with two cats rather than one. Sanura, our female, was getting bored every week or so, so we´d buy new toys, play with her more, my husband constructed a little jungle gym out of cardboard, but nothing mattered. So, we got her a playmate (someone my husband had fallen IN LOVE with at one of the stations we feed at for the volunteer group we´re involved in SAFER) and they have been best friends. Does your apt have more than one bedroom?? They need a bit of space to get away from each other, but even if it´s just for a year, that´s one year less that Herman has to be alone and it might make the move easier on him if he has someone to do it with, ya know?? Not always, but sometimes. Where did you grow up??

When I first got my Tikvah my roommate at the time got her brother McGee so she had a playmate until we moved out.  The next place we lived in came with 5 kitty friends, no boredom there.  My next roomate didn’t come with a cat and I began to notice Tikvah was much more needy than she had been before.  I would park right in front of my apartment and as I walked to my front door I could hear her bounding down the steps to greet me at the door.  It was not much later that I adopted Tohuw whom Tikvah took care of like he was her baby until he got bigger than her and chased her around.  5 years later and he still lets her clean him every now and then Overall, some cats are social creatures and others are not.  Try to figure out which one Herman is before you try to add somebody new to the household.

Well, Herman is pretty social and I think that he would like having a friend, though it might take a little getting used to.  We were definitely thinking about a girl because he’s just such a BOY that I thought another one might freak him out.  I want to get another one before he’s lost his playfulness, too.  He just thinks he’s a person right now since he hangs out with us all the time.  He helps with EVERYthing.  He’s in the bathroom when I shower, he watches tv, he sits on the counter when I’m cooking . . . I think he’s forgotten he’s a cat.
